What if I want to import a vehicle myself?

There’s no better way to get acquainted with your new classic than to jump straight in and embark on the road trip of a lifetime but depending on which country you’re importing to, there are different processes to follow and not all require the same documentation. Fortunately, this information is readily available and regularly updated.

Plan your journey in advance with this useful guide to cross-border purchase and registration within Europe.

HMRC also provides a wealth of information: https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk

Travelling by sea?

You can stick it in a container (by itself or with other vehicles) or you can simply drive the car home (did someone say road trip!?), crossing any sea borders on a ‘roll on and roll off’ ferry. The choice is yours and will depend on the drive-ability of the vehicle in question, as well as your own personal preference and budget.

In any case, you’ll need to contact a reputable shipping company and liaise with the seller to sort out any required documentation as well as the logistics of actually getting your new purchase on a boat. But remember, if this all seems a little daunting just give CARS Europe a call on +44 (0) 1284 850 950 and they can take the wheel.

Vehicles can be considerably cheaper in foreign markets but we highly recommend obtaining a quote for shipping as early as possible before an auction ends or you make an offer as it’s important that you’re fully aware of any costs you may incur if you need to import a vehicle.
